What is tilt in trading?

Tilt is a state in which frustration — usually after a loss or a run of losses — takes over decision-making. The term comes from poker. A tilted trader keeps trading, but the decisions get faster, larger and less selective, and rules that were obvious in the morning stop being applied.

Key points

  • Tilt is the state; revenge trading and overtrading are what it produces.
  • It usually starts after a loss that feels unfair.
  • A stop rule agreed in advance ends a tilted session better than willpower.

Where the term comes from

Poker players call play that deteriorates after losses “tilt”. Studying online poker players’ accounts of big losses, Palomäki, Laakasuo and Salmela (2013) describe how loss-induced emotions, such as a sense of unfairness, lead to worse and riskier decisions — the same pattern traders recognise after a bad stop.

Warning signs

  • You feel the market “owes” you.
  • You stop reading the checklist and start clicking.
  • Size or frequency goes up while selectivity goes down.
  • You keep trading past the session or limit you set.

How to stop a tilted session

  • Agree the stop rule in advance: a daily loss limit, a maximum number of losses, a fixed pause.
  • Make the rule mechanical — close the platform rather than “try to calm down”.
  • Write one line about how you feel before each entry; it makes the state visible.

Example

After a stop that reverses a tick later, a trader writes “unfair” in the notes and re-enters at once. Two trades later the day’s loss is three times the first stop. The first loss was the market; the rest was tilt.

Numbers are illustrative.

Questions

Is tilt a sign of a bad trader?

No. It is a common response to losses. The skill is noticing it early and having a rule that ends the session.

How is tilt different from revenge trading?

Tilt is the state; revenge trading is one behaviour it produces — trading to win back a loss.
