Trading discipline glossary
Short, sourced definitions of the terms traders use when they talk about discipline, risk and prop-firm rules — each with an example and a way to measure it.
Before the trade
- Pre-trade checklistA fixed set of questions answered before every entry — about the setup, the risk and the trader.
- Trading readiness (readiness index)How prepared you are to trade today — state and discipline — scored from 1 to 10 before the first trade.
- Entry scoreA 1–10 rating of how closely a trade follows your own plan, calculated before the order is placed.
- Discipline indexA 0–100 score of how consistently a trader follows their own rules, measured from behaviour, not profit.
- Trading planWritten rules for what, when and how much you trade — and when you stop for the day.
- Trading journalA record of every trade and the decision behind it, kept for regular review.
Psychology
- Revenge tradingOpening a trade to win back a recent loss, not because your setup appeared.
- FOMO in tradingEntering because the price is moving without you, not because your setup is in place.
- OvertradingTaking more trades than your plan allows or your edge supports.
- TiltA state in which frustration after losses takes over trading decisions.
